Presidential politics rarely intersects with objective reality, so perhaps it’s not surprising to see so many conservative Republicans besotted with reality TV star Donald Trump.

Thrice-divorced, notoriously lackadaisical about morals and ethics, Trump is hardly a pillar of conservative principle. However, he has been lauded by Pat Robertson’s CBN cable network for his firm stance on the “bread-and-butter issue” of hostility toward Islam. Some secular conservatives, such as radio personality Rush Limbaugh, extol Trump’s supposed toughness and his purported wizardry as an investor and developer.

However, Trump’s fortune is an illusion nearly as carefully wrought as his notoriously elaborate comb-over. Much of it has been acquired through the state-facilitated pillage called eminent domain. In building his Trump Casino complex in the early 1990s, the mogul conspired with a New Jersey agency in an attempt to evict numerous long-time residents from their homes in order to seize coveted property.

Although that attempt , failed it says a great deal about the character and ideology of a figure who currently causes conservative pulses to race.

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
