For the most part, voting is little more than an exercise in participatory larceny. Occasionally, however, the franchise is used to enforce accountability. This was the case last Tuesday when voters in Minnesota?s Ramsey County rejected the re-election bid of . Sheriff Bob Fletcher
During the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Fletcher earned headlines by conducting pre-emptive raids on people he claimed were planning acts of terrorism. In fact, the subjects of that crack-down were law-abiding local activists who were planning peaceful demonstrations to coincide with the event.
Although Fletcher?s department collaborated with the FBI?s Joint Terrorism Task Force during the convention, its gang enforcement unit was under investigation for stealing millions of dollars? worth of cash and property. Just days before the RNC arrests, two of Fletcher?s close associates were convicted of theft and corruption charges.
After a decade and a half as a corrupt sheriff, Bob Fletcher is an unemployed one, hopefully the first of many more to come.
Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
