Todd Blair of Roy, Utah had a relatively short and troubled life, which ended shortly before 10 PM on September 16.
Blair was in the basement of his home when he heard footsteps and the voices of strangers at the back door. Thinking that he was being robbed, Blair grabbed a golf club and went upstairs to confront the intruders.
The invaders were police officers from the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force. On the basis of an anonymous tip the police had obtained a no-knock search warrant for methamphetamine and heroin. After gunning down Blair the officers were able to scour up less than half an ounce of marijuana.
Had Blair lived in Portugal, where all drugs were decriminalized ten years ago, he would have been offered treatment for his addiction, rather than being slaughtered in his own home. What kind of country can countenance a policy that frequently results in the needless death of flawed but harmless people?
Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
