As our economic crisis deepens, the media is inundating the public with entirely dishonest accounts of the causes of the Great Depression of the 1930s.

In the typical account we?re told that the Depression was caused by inadequate government intervention in the economy, and that FDR supposedly introduced just enough central planning to rescue capitalism from its own excesses.

The Depression was created by the Federal Reserve?s inflationary policies. Rather than letting the economy self-correct, Republican President Herbert Hoover intervened by spending huge amounts of money, expanding the welfare system, and imposing price controls.

In the 1933 election, the FDR Democrats actually condemned Hoover for excessive interference in the economy. Roosevelt?s running mate accused Hoover of ?leading the country down the path of socialism.?

Once in power, FDR built on Hoover?s socialist policies, needlessly prolonging the Depression by about a dozen years. Our current rulers seem determined to replicate that tragedy.

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
