David Updyke, the first sheriff of Idaho?s Ada County, was also the head of Boise?s largest criminal gang Updyke organized a syndicate of ?road agents? ? armed thugs who carried out stagecoach robberies.

Sheriff Updyke was inspired by the example of Sheriff Henry Plummer, who had organized a similar racket in Bannack, Montana.

Frontier-era "road agents" were the direct ancestors of the paramilitary "forfeiture gangs" employed by police agencies today, who plunder motorists and property owners under the color of law.

Police in Aurora, Illinois recently confiscated $190,000 from local residents Jose and Jesus Martinez There is no evidence that the brothers had committed a crime of any kind. Rather than complying with a court order to return the stolen money, the police turned it over to the Department of Homeland Security in anticipation of a lucrative kick-back.

Those engaged in such undisguised highway robbery should be reminded that both Updyke and Plummer were taken prisoner by outraged citizens and ended their days swinging from the end of a rope.

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
