Hanni Elabed was convicted of robbery and sentenced to a term inside the Idaho Correctional Center, a quasi-private prison run by the Corrections Corporation of America (or CCA).

A video recently released by the Associated Press shows Elabed being beaten into a coma by another inmate. Elabed can be seen pleading with guards on the other side of a locked door. The guards refuse to intervene even when the assailant sits down for a break.

A lawsuit filed against the prison claims the staff runs what has been called a ?gladiator school? in which some inmates are permitted to beat and abuse others who refuse to become snitches. Medical treatment is allegedly withheld from victims as a way of covering up the crimes.

The CCA?s response to the video that corroborates at least some of those charges was to condemn the AP for supposedly creating a ?security risk? to prison staff. The only risk posed by the disclosure was to the job security of the corrupt officials who profit from such crimes.

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
