A 2010 diplomatic cable to Washington from the U.S. embassy in the West African nation of Ivory Coast described how UN ?peacekeeping? troops blackmailed children into performing sex acts in exchange for food.

The communique, which was obtained and published by the WikiLeaks whistleblower group, described how UN blue beret troops from Benin enticed girl children to perform sexual acts in exchange for basic necessities of life.

This is hardly a unique or even isolated case. In fact, in the absence of other intelligence it would be possible to follow the movements of UN troops by simply watching out for a sudden and otherwise inexplicable spike in child prostitution rates.

Former high-ranking UN aid official Andrew Thomson points out that blue berets cynically call such exploitation of children ?emergency sex.? While singularly efficient at such abuse, blue berets are notoriously unsuitable for the task of protecting the innocent from genocidal violence. Thomson summarizes the matter with admirable concision: "If blue-helmeted UN peacekeepers show up in your town or village and offer to protect you, run?. Your lives are worth so much less than theirs."
