The State of Illinois has begun the legal process of seizing private property for the supposed purpose of building a third airport to compliment O?Hare International and Midway.

This project is entirely unnecessary: A perfectly serviceable international airport already exists in depressed Rockford, Illinois, and the town would welcome an effort to expand it. But this would deprive the state?s patronage pimps of an opportunity to confer perks, payouts, and other politically useful graft of their favored constituents.

However, most residents in the targeted area aren?t willing to sell. With land values in an historic slump, the state government is moving quickly to condemn the land, grabbing it by force and fraud before the economy recovers and prices go up.

During the 19th Century, ?Manifest Destiny? was the incantatory phrase uttered by the government as it gave itself permission to steal property belonging to Indian tribes. Today, the preferred conjuration is ?eminent domain.?

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
