The Afghan Riots Aren't Just About Burning Korans

The recent eruption of anti-American violence in Afghanistan wasn?t just a reaction to disclosures that U.S. military personnel had burned copies of the Koran.

One protester, Maruf Hotak, told the New York Times:  ?This is not just about dishonoring the Koran, it is about disrespecting our dead and killing our children.? This was a reference to the well-publicized incident in which a Marine combat patrol urinated on the dead bodies of Afghan fighters, and a recent airstrike in Kapisa Province in which eight unarmed teenagers were killed.

According to NATO Air Commodore Mike Wigston, the teenagers ? who had been grazing livestock in the hills ? were killed by a drone-fired missile because ?they were seen as adult-sized and moving in a tactical fashion? and were thus seen as ?an imminent threat? to a local NATO patrol.

At the time of the airstrike, the boys ? who ranged in age from 12 to 16 years old ? were clustered around a small campfire.

Rather than admitting responsibility for this atrocity, NATO officials offered to build a road near the village where it took place. The local population would prefer that they leave. Wouldn?t we feel the same way if we were in their place?

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
