Critics of the proposed Cordoba House ? a Muslim community center that would be constructed a few blocks from the World Trade Center site in New York City ? have accused project director Imam Faisal Adbul Rauf of claiming that the 9-11 atrocity was America?s fault.
What Abdul Rauf actually said in his post-911 60 Minutes interview ? in which he explicitly condemned Islamic terrorism -- was that 9-11 was, in part, a product of Washington ?ally[ing itself] with oppressive regimes in many of these countries?. I wouldn't say that the United States deserved what happened, but United States policies were an accessory to the crime that happened.?
Taking that comment at face value, Adbul Rauf wants Washington to stop funding Islamic dictators and radicals abroad. Isn?t that a sound and commendable perspective ? all the more useful since it comes from a devout Muslim?
There may be good reasons to oppose building the Cordoba House. But Christians are not allowed to bear false witness, even against someone we may consider an enemy.
Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
