Will Grigg?s Liberty Minute

August 16, 2011

Anthony and Chrisianna Smith may be unpleasant company, but they aren?t criminals. Yet through the intervention of a police officer they wound up in jail in Foley, Arkansas, charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and second-degree assault on an officer.

Officer Caleb Bibby encountered the couple at a Wal-Mart. According to a spokesman for his agency, Bibby was doing a ?walk-through? in order "to create presence and let the owners and customers see [him] out and about.? The Smiths saw the officer and began to berate him, which is obnoxious and unnecessary ? but it isn?t a crime.

Bibby maneuvered them outside and called for backup, and insisted on arresting Anthony. The man refused to go, insisting that he wanted to go home. At that point Bibby had no reason to continue the confrontation ? but he did. . He eventually assaulted Anthony with his taser ? a brand-new toy recently purchased by the department. Meanwhile another officer tackled Chrisianna from her blind side, an assault on a querulous but defenseless woman that hardly leaves the officer covered in glory.

One key difference between peace officers and law enforcers is that the former, unlike the latter, don?t go out of their way to manufacture trouble.

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
