For all of his insipid prattle about unspecified change, Barack Obama intends to pick up seamlessly where George W. Bush left off.
One point of agreement between Bush and Obama involves the use of executive orders as a substitute for constitutionally legitimate legislation. The Obama transition team has already indicated that the new administration would reverse orders issued by Bush dealing with embryonic stem cell experimentation and expansion of oil and gas drilling
According to Obama spokesman John Podesta, "There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action.? Since Obama ?feels like he has a real mandate for change,? Podesta continued, he will use presidential decrees ?to transform the way government acts?.?
The Bush presidency devised the ?unitary executive? theory, under which presidents could rule by decree. Bush supporters who championed that theory may have reason to lament the uses to which it will be put by Obama.
Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
