As police departments expand, recruitment standards for police appear to be slipping. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently reported: ?More than one-third of recent Atlanta Police Academy graduates have been arrested or cited for a crime?. The arrests ranged from minor offenses such as shoplifting to violent charges including assault.?

The situation in Atlanta is somewhat exceptional, since one-third of recently graduated police cadets in that city ?had been rejected by other law enforcement agencies?.?

In defense of his department, Atlanta Police Lt. Elder Dancy asserts: ?I don?t think you?ll find any departments who hire only applicants with squeaky-clean records.?

Moral paragons are always in short supply, of course. But there is a significant difference between one police recruit whose record contains the occasional traffic citation, and another whose record includes crimes against persons and property.

It makes little sense to give guns and badges to the kind of people from whom the police are supposed to protect the public.

Sound Money October 15, 2008

He was scorned by the Republican Party leadership, mocked and slandered for his morally sound opposition to the Iraq War, and forbidden a speaking role at the recent convention. But former presidential candidate Ron Paul is now receiving credit for his repeated urgent warnings about the economic catastrophe now enveloping our nation.

For decades, Rep. Paul warned that our system of fiat money, fractional reserve banking, and public debt was unsustainable. Last week brought terrible vindication as investment markets collapsed and millions of people saw their retirement accounts disappear.

Five years ago, Dr. Paul introduced the Honest Money Act, which would repeal the so-called legal tender laws that compel acceptance of irredeemable paper money. Citizens would have the option of using constitutional money ? gold and silver ? to conduct business.

Though Congress shows no interest in the Honest Money Act, it points the direction we must go if economic sanity is to be restored.

The October Revolution of 2008* October 14, 2008

We are witnessing an October Revolution in 2008 that may prove to be fill in words hereeven more destructive than the one that gripped Russia in 1917.

The earlier revolution brought to power a ruthless collectivist movement that used the power of the state to confiscate wealth, regiment the lives of a nation spanning eleven time zones, and impose policies that led to the death of more than 100 million people.

The October Revolution of 2008 has already destroyed trillions of dollars in investments, redistributed trillions more into the hands of the financial elite, and created a de facto economic dictatorship in the U.S.

Not content to destroy our Bill of Rights, the Bush Regime is now enacting policies taken directly from the Communist Manifesto by working to nationalize the banking system. And working in tandem with European political leaders and central bankers, Washington is building the foundation for a global central bank and global fiat currency.

Fiction about the Great Depression October 13, 2008

October 13, 2008

As our economic crisis deepens, the media is inundating the public with entirely dishonest accounts of the causes of the Great Depression of the 1930s.

In the typical account we?re told that the Depression was caused by inadequate government intervention in the economy, and that FDR supposedly introduced just enough central planning to rescue capitalism from its own excesses.

The Depression was created by the Federal Reserve?s inflationary policies. Rather than letting the economy self-correct, Republican President Herbert Hoover intervened by spending huge amounts of money, expanding the welfare system, and imposing price controls.

In the 1933 election, the FDR Democrats actually condemned Hoover for excessive interference in the economy. Roosevelt?s running mate accused Hoover of ?leading the country down the path of socialism.?

Once in power, FDR built on Hoover?s socialist policies, needlessly prolonging the Depression by about a dozen years. Our current rulers seem determined to replicate that tragedy.

Bin Laden's Mission is Accomplished* October 10, 2008

As our financial system reels, our markets collapse, and an economic abyss looms directly ahead, the question must be asked yet again: Why won?t our rulers end the pointless and counter-productive war in Iraq?

Our current economic crisis is described as a ?credit crunch.? Thus it?s significant that the war on Iraq ? which neither attacked nor threatened the U.S. ? has been fought on credit. The war has cost more than a half-trillion dollars . Altogether the price of the so-called ?war on terror? runs more than a trillion dollars.

In a videotaped message broadcast after the September 11 attacks, Osama bin Laden explained that his objective was to goad the United States into a course that would bring about our financial ruin.

Thanks to the indispensable help of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and their comrades, bin Laden can proudly proclaim: Mission Accomplished.

Socialism for the Rich, Penury for the Poor October 9, 2008

The Federal Reserve, which serves as the official counterfeiting arm of the Regime that rules us, has announced it will buy up huge amounts of commercial short-term debt .

This means that in addition to bailing out investment banks and mortgage lenders, the Federal government will now bail out commercial banks, large private businesses, and city governments.

Foreclosure-ridden California, which is ground zero for the housing bust, is in a severe budget crisis and will shortly ask for a federal bailout. Other states will soon follow suit.

All of this will generate sharp spikes in the rate of inflation, which is already ravaging millions of American households. In New York, gas and electricity shut-offs for non-payment have grown by 17 percent over last year; the rate has increased by 22 percent in Michigan, and significant increases have been tallied in Pennsylvania, Florida, and California.

This winter, socialism for the rich will mean frigid hardship for the poor.

"Crimes" of Opinion October 8, 2008

Like millions of other people, German-born Australian citizen Gerald Toben maintains a website he uses to publish his opinions. Mr. Toben, a self-described historical revisionist, used his website to dispute the established history of the episode commonly called The Holocaust.

During a recent flight from the U.S. to Dubai, Toben was arrested while changing planes in London. The British police were acting on a European Union arrest warrant issued by German authorities. Under German law it is a crime to express opinions classified as ?anti-Semitic and/or of a revisionist nature.?

Through the EU, Germany compelled British police to seize Toben to stand trial in Germany for a supposed offense committed in Australia.

The disreputable content of Toben?s views aside, incident illustrates the dangers posed by the emerging system of extra-territorial law enforcement. They?re going after a ?Holocaust denier? today; tomorrow, critics of homosexuality or radical Islam could find themselves in the dock.

The Dictatorship is Unveiled October 7, 2008

In the teeth of nearly unanimous opposition from the electorate, Congress enacted a $700 billion measure to bail out Wall Street interests damaged by the credit crisis.

The measure was an austere three pages long when it was first submitted to Congress on September 29. Amid a torrential outpouring of voter rage, the House defeated the bill. The same bill, plumped up to more than 400 pages in length and larded with special interest pork, passed with little difficulty four days later.

The Bush Regime and its congressional allies deployed both bribes and blackmail.Democratic congressman Brad Sherman of California recalled that several Congressmen ?were told that there would be martial law in America if we voted `no.??

Tragically, there?s nothing new about Congress ignoring the Constitution and the people. There is something new and ominous in the administration?s threat to hold the public hostage through Martial Law. This is how politics operates under a dictatorship.

Beyond Orwell's Imagination October 3, 2008

George Orwell would have recognized the name of our Homeland Security Department as something perfectly suited to the dystopian society he described in 1984. But it?s doubtful that even his uniquely fertile imagination could have anticipated MALINTENT, a screening system that can supposedly read the minds of potential terrorists.

Currently undergoing tests in Maryland, MALINTENT employs a series of sensors and imagers that collect biometric information such as heart rate, body temperature, respiration rate, perspiration, and eye nictation. Although the technology?s success rate in trials remains classified, Admiral Jay Cohen, Undersecretary of Homeland Security for Science and Technology, describes the experiment as a ?home run.? The system is scheduled for deployment at airports within the next two years.

MALINTENT Project Leader Bob Burns insists that MALINT is intended ?to restore a sense of freedom? for air travelers. The only suitable term to describe that vision of freedom is ?Orwellian.?

Drop that Sudafed! October 2, 2008

The Cold and Flu season is nigh on arrival. So it?s important to remember that the government that rules us has criminalized ownership of what it regards as excessive amounts of decongestant.

In 2005, Congress passed a measure under which purchase of non-prescription medicines containing pseudoephedrine are strictly monitored and limited. Attempts to purchase amounts above the limit are reported to the police and Drug Enforcement Administration. This is done for the supposed purpose of combating the manufacture of Methamphetamine, a narcotic widely available in any state or federal prison.

Last year, an Ontario, New York man named William Fousse became the first person arrested under that measure. His supposed offense was to buy a total of 400 Bronkaid tablets. Police couldn?t produced evidence Fousse intended to manufacture Meth, but he was convicted of a federal crime and sentenced to a year?s probation for the supposed crime of possessing a legal cold remedy.

Let us take back the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free.
